Sawty Round Up- Round 9
SAWTY CRICKET ROUND UP
ROUND 9
The anti-domestic violence round resulted in captains of our top grade teams initiating some great chats about men taking a stand against domestic violence. The orange hats were definitely a stand out. There is the potential for this initiative to become nation-wide.
The Junior Christmas Party was on 9th December. It was great to see our juniors training, grabbing a snag and a drink and then straight to backyard cricket on Richo. Thanks to Kelly and Rod for the organizing and to all the parents who helped with the cooking and serving.
A draw for U14s this week against Colts. Gotta love the close ones.
1st and 2nd grades were relentless this week, winning easily. The much anticipated and AI researched 4th grade Sawty v Sawty game was a high scoring match. At one point in the game we had to search, to no avail, for a ball Rod tapped over the fence and into the Toormi scrub. The reports that follow fill in the details of the game but let’s just say AI is still learning about cricket and its really hard to predict when you are going to get an in-swinging yorker like the one Ned castled me with or ….. the super slow ball that gets you checking your shot and spooning one to mid-off, hey Ned.
SPONSOR OF THE WEEK- Split Cafe
Split Café has been a long term sponsor of the club.

U10s
Sawtell Suns match review : our Under 10’s played another enjoyable game at Jetty Oval on Saturday morning . We provided players for the opposition team again (Thanks Archie and Sunny!) Our players are learning about backing up and walking in the bowler. This is helping them to be ready for fielding (when they are not looking at the seagulls and aeroplanes ✈️!) Thanks again to our wonderful parents for all your help.
U12 Sixers
The Buzzards had their wings clipped in their match up with the Sixers.
Percy, Jai, Oaklan, and Otis all cracked double figures to help put 140 on the board.
The bowling was tight and the fielding great with good catching and two runouts. Jai decided it was time to head home and cleaned up the tail with 2 wickets in the last over.
The Sixers have landed second on the ladder halfway through the season. Its going to take a good team to slow them down as they power to the finals.
U12s Sloggers
12 Sloggers vs Macksville Blue 6 Dec.
Sloggers rose early to travel down the highway to take on Macksville Blue. While the scorecard shows that we lost the game, it was a very encouraging effort by the team - probably our best game yet. It was really pleasing to see the intent shown by the team and applying themselves to all the little things we have been working on at training - running between wickets, loud calls, backing up when batting and when in the field and encouraging our team mates.
Macksville batted first making 100. Bodhi and Levi took one each with Oscar getting 2 wickets. Bodhi continued his good form in the field with 2 catches and a runout.
In our batting innings we made 79. Nate top scored with 23 supported by not outs from Oscar (13) and Levi (14).
U14s
V Colts
After winning the toss and electing to bat we never truly got our rhythm, with a number of players getting a start however through a combination of tight bowling and good fielding we weren’t able to go on with it. Solid scores from Jai and Lincoln who top scored with 15 each, and Lucas with 14, helped us to accrue a modest 7/79. After a half time pep talk we took the field, ready to turn tight fielding into opportunities. We knew we had to be on our game to come away with the win and the game ebbed and flowed in both directions throughout Coffs Colts innings. A solid 36 from 30 deliveries from one of their players took Coffs into the box seat, with 7 required off the last two overs. A tight over from Jasmine, conceding just one off the 19th over meant that Coffs needed 6 to win off the final over. After a nail biting and somewhat lucky final oval Coffs managed to pull together 5 runs off the last over, ending the game with a tight draw with both teams scoring 7/79 off their 20 overs. Wickets for Sawtell were shared between Jai, Jasmine, Leo and Lincoln. Another wonderful game with a tight finish. Well done to both teams, another great game to watch!

4th Grade Gold
Congratulations everyone today in Gold, who were involved in today’s matchup against our other Sawtell team. Unfortunately we didn’t get the chocolates, but it was a gutsy effort all round.
After losing the toss and sent in to bowl, Jai and Ned opened with the objective of taking wickets. The first combined spell ended with the score line of 1/25. Two more wickets fell before the tenth over, with one of them being awarded to Liam. The blue team started to run away with a high scoring partnership, which was broken by some line and length bowling from Jig, bringing us to drinks of the first innings with a score line of 3-95. Lincoln and Marto then had a spell together, keeping it consistently on the stumps before changing the attack to Zach and Percy. Two consecutive wickets from Percy alluded to the end of the innings, which was followed by a wicket from each Lincoln and Ned. This brought us to the end of our bowling innings with a total of 194 put in the board against us.
The Martin family stepped up to the crease first in the order. They saw out the entire first spell, before Percy was dismissed in the 9th over. Zach came in at 3, where he hit a nice boundary, adding precious runs to the staggering total to chase. Lincoln came in next, who rotated the strike between himself and Brett, before his dismissal. Not long after, Brett finished his innings with 41* off just 37 balls, including four boundaries. Rod and Liam stepped up to the pitch, with Liam ending his innings with 11 runs including 2 boundaries. His stats don’t show the extent of his impact, as he aided an injured Rod to his whopping 41* off just 24 balls. Jig and Ned were the next partnership, but was cut short by the lbw call of doom. Hence, Jai and Ned were given the task of scoring the last 60 runs off the remaining 6 overs. The chase proved too difficult, the last two wickets of Jai and Ned brought the end of the innings with Gold putting up 7 for 149 all out after 33.2 overs.
Although we didn’t get the end result we all wanted, we can now reflect upon our performance and use it to improve throughout the rest of the season. A special thanks to Kelly for scoring the game, as well as Hunter for umpiring. The report cannot be finished without mentioning Eli, who was subbed in against his brother, assisting us in the field and remained not out in the batting. Training as usual is on Tuesday afternoon, and I hope to see everyone again before we venture out to Nana Glen this Saturday.
Many thanks - Zach and Ned

4th Grade Blue
4th grade blue vs 4th grade gold. 6th Dec
Sawtell remains BLUE!!
The much awaited clash of Sawtell took place this week. It’s always an odd feeling to take on your club mates as the opposition. The week leading up to the game saw plenty of AI slop produced and some gentle banter. The game was also played under the Bowling Out Violence campaign and I would like to acknowledge all the women and girls who are so vital to both teams - scorers Holly and Kelly, team members Eva and Jas, but also all the partners, wives and mothers who support their families to play the game we love - a worthy cause to get behind.
Blue won the toss and chose to bat which resulted in our most accomplished batting performance to date, setting 194 with strong partnerships throughout. This allowed our youngsters to take control of the bowling innings and show what they can do to tie down the opposition. A really good all round performance from all to get a really important win and confidence boost. Blue were winners by 45 runs and delivered the golds their first defeat of the season.
It would be remiss not to acknowledge the opposition - really enjoyable watching the batting innings of Rod and Brett, Ned’s bowling and all the juniors giving it a red hot crack. Thank you to Rod and Kelly for providing the much needed refreshments after the game and all the supporters who attended to cheer us on. Already can’t wait for the next one (which is 21/02/26 if anyone was wondering).
PS: if Mike opens the bowling from now on he has requested to be referred to as Mike Starc or ‘Starcy’ for short 😉. ( President’s note: This is more AI rubbish)
3rd Grade
Sat 6th December. Game review. Sawtell vs Bello Yellow
After winning the toss, we decided to field with the wind blowing a gale, we started off with Edyn & James bowling, followed by Finlay, Peter, Liam & Bob. At 19 overs they were 4 for about 40. Then Brayth L came in & the flood gates opened. It took Bello 19.4 over to hit their first boundary. Bello finished on 7 for 174.
Our turn to bat. Well. it was short! A slow careful start was interrupted by 3 early wickets as we reached 44 runs, then 4 quick wickets and we were 7 for 45, before being all out for 58. Top scorer was Sundries with 21 & Bob hitting 11. Hope things go better, next Saturday as we take on top of the table, Nana Blue at Toormina .
2nd Grade
Coming off a firey Thursday night last week the boys were ready to go. Undefeated Woolgoolga had a tone that they already won the game before it started.
Woolgoolga won the toss and elected to bat. We bowled exceptionally with the pressure of Henry Jarman bowling 6 overs with an economy rate of just 1.71 . It was a perfect bowling partnership with Brayden, that helped take wickets. With Josh De Groot cleaning up with a 4fa. We got them all out for 98.
We got off to a shaky start being 4 for 35. Busby and Zac batted though a challenging period of sledging and good bowling that absolutely ripped the opposition. Busby and Zac getting the boys home was fantastic to watch. Chased down the runs comfortably.
4/99.
