Sawty Cricket Round Up - Round 1
Round one saw our club fielding a team in each of the 4 senior grades. Juniors commence their season next week.
A big welcome to any new players to the club and a big shoutout to the juniors playing grade cricket for the first time.
Each week I’m attempting to collate reports from team captains and coaches. We’re talking up results, key performances and unusual or amusing events that regularly happen in our beautiful game.
4TH GRADE by Dan
Well done today. Unfortunately didn’t quite get the win but everyone should be happy with their contributions in a close game. They chased down our 130 in the second last over.
A few juniors played their first game in grade cricket and are sure to develop into even better cricketers as the year progresses. Cooper had his first game for Sawtell and received his cap from Captain Dan.
We have the bye next week so will put a call out for who is available the week after.

3rd GRADE by Jig
It was good a effort from Sawtell 3rd Grade today. We batted first but didn’t have enough on the board (all out on 96). Nana Glen was just too good today. Chased us down quickly. Everyone gave a good effort until the end. Let’s get to training on Tuesday. I know we will get stronger on the other side of the season. Go Sawtyyy 🏏🙏🏽🙌🏽 .
2ND GRADE by Alex
Captain was very impressed by some new faces in the team on the weekend. A couple of highlights: Special K ( aka James K) with a very handy 3-fa taking some key wickets, Zac Levy with an inspiring knock of 45 and Lukey B with a couple of great snares early on.
I think there are a lot of positives to take out of that game. I thought our bowling and batting was pretty good, and a few blokes with the bat are looking very promising this year, the runs will flow. Our line and length with the ball was okay. Ransom swinging that ball into the right-handers is always exciting to watch.
The team with the best fielding almost always wins the game of cricket and that showed on the weekend. Catching, backing up, misfields, throwing the ball to the keeper on the full, chat on the field.
We will all learn more and more each training session and game day. Let’s grow together as a team, support each other, and lift that trophy at the end of the year. 💙💛
1ST GRADE by Tyh
It was a hot start to the day. Field set up followed by a Tedball game to get the boys pumped.
Lost the toss but sent in on a Richo 2 road.
Sawty getting into their groove early with the bat with decent partnerships all the way through their 40overs. Skipper, Tyh Murphy getting a quick 73 before missing a straight one onto the pads. A few 20s through the middle from Trent Dierick and Will Bailey. But biggest partnership of 80runs between Jesse Buckle 34 and Justin Carlisle (our South African import) 50. Closed out the innings at 8/256.
1st boys started well with the ball. Colts 3/11 in a few overs in, including Trent Dierick with a cracking dive to create a runout. Richie Gallichan 2/22 off 8, Tyh Murphy 2/22 off 6. Boys continued to bowl steadily through the innings but rued a few dropped chances which could’ve ended the innings a bit earlier especially with the pitch becoming the M1 and really tough to get the opposition batsmen out on. Colts finished 8/175.
A well rounded game. Overall, batting was the standout as a unit, bowling was accurate and consistent, but the fielding was subpar for our expectations as a unit, which we will be targeting as a squad to improve upon.
We take on Diggers next Saturday at Fitzroy Oval.
