Sawty Round Up 13
SAWTY CRICKET ROUND UP
ROUND 13
It would be great to get as many of our club and families to the T20 final this Thursday night, 19th Feb.at Richardson Park. Game starts at 6pm. Our Gold team is playing Woopi in the final after trouncing Colts in the semi. Good luck from all in the Club.
We had a well attended Sawtell Cricket Club committee meeting on Monday 9th Feb. A lot of people volunteer to work hard to keep our club humming along. We are starting to sort end of year presentations. We are looking at wet weather venues options for the juniors, if required.
Senior Presentation Night is booked for Saturday evening 28th March at Sawtell Hotel. Junior Presentation Arvo is Sunday arvo 22nd March at Richardson Park. Please put the dates in your calendars.
Best of luck to all teams as we approach the Juniors and Grade Cricket finals. Hopefully we can get lots of teams in the finals and then turn up and win the big ones.

U10s Suns
Sawtell Suns v Macksville under 10's
Absolute ripper day for cricket on pink stumps day. Macksville won the toss and chose to field. Their positive team chat was inspirational and also motivated some determined batting from the suns. Our guys played a steady bat with minimal loss of wickets and one of the shots of the day went to Immi sending one high to deep mid wicket.
In the field we faced a determined batting attack with some aggressive running. Fortunately we have been practising our backing up and shut down a bunch of extra runs. As the sun got hotter our energy started to wane but nonetheless it was a well played game on a beautiful day.
U10s Stars
The new Stars of the Sawtell Cricket Club played their second match under new coach Joel. The team played against the colts. With 5 players on the field they were either keeping , bowling or chasing a ball on every delivery. Oden played his first match and put every ball on the stumps whilst Jarvis almost had his first caught and bowled . Archie kept a straight bat and played some great shots. Theo told us how he was going to go and hit a four - and then did! Lucas is playing like a 10 year old and he is only in Year 1. The future is bright with this bunch !

U12 Sixers
Sawtell Sixers U12s vs Macksville Bulls U12 Blue
Donnelly Welsh Field
The Sawtell Sixers won the toss and elected to bat in what became a clear game of contrasting halves against Macksville Bulls Blue at a beautifully manicured (if slightly fluffy) Donnelly Welsh Field, where boundaries had to be earned. The match was played as part of Pink Stumps Day, with raffles supporting the McGrath Foundation and adding a strong community feel to the morning.
Batting:
The Sixers found it tough early, with the first 10 overs proving challenging. Timing was off, momentum hard to build, and decision-making just a fraction late.
That’s Under 12s cricket. A full week at school may not have helped sharpness, while the Bulls looked well prepared after a trial run the night before against their club compatriots.
As the innings progressed, the Sixers finished far more positively. Percy Martin anchored the innings with 28 not out off 31 balls, showing patience and good awareness to give the Sixers something to bowl at. Oaklan Jones provided solid support with 9 not out off 23 balls, helping lift the total late.
The Sixers closed their innings on 7–84, a total that looked competitive given the spacious outfield.
Bowling & Fielding:
The Sixers couldn’t have asked for a better start with the ball, with Walter Martin striking in the first over to remove an early wicket and put the Bulls under immediate pressure.
While no further wickets fell before drinks, sundries helped the Bulls’ total grow, allowing the scoreboard to tick along through the middle overs. After the 10-over drinks break, the Sixers lifted noticeably — bowling straighter, communicating better, and creating genuine chances.
As the game tightened, the equation was clear: Macksville needed 12 runs from the final two overs, while the Sixers knew two wickets could swing the match.
Sawtell struck with one wicket, lifting belief across the field, but the following delivery was sent to the boundary. The Bulls crossed the line with six balls to spare, winning by one wicket.
A tough result, but a valuable one.
Early lapses made 84 difficult to defend, yet once the Sixers focused on the basics, they created pressure and genuine chances late in the game.
Unfortunately no chants of “Ooh aah to The Star” happening this time around… Next time boys!!
U12s Sloggers
12s Sloggers vs Urunga 7th Feb
Sloggers took on Urunga at Toormina. In a low scoring affair Urunga scrambled a single on the last ball to get the win.
Sawty batted first and set 69. It was a big effort in the field to remain in the game and take it down to the wire and will be good experience for the team moving forward. Play of the day went to Xanders perfectly flighted delivery that fooled the batter into lofting the ball straight to cover to get a great wicket.
You find some interesting things at sports ground - particularly wildlife. But we never expected to see a penny turtle. Which was spotted half way through the match near the pitch. The little turtle was safely collected and rehomed to a safer location
U14s
On Wednesday night our Under 14’s came back feeling refreshed after an 8 week break filled with Christmas, an accelerated Ashes series and an entertaining Big Bash. After mutually replacing the traditional toss with a gentleman’s agreement we donned the pads and got underway. After a solid start by Bodhi (11) and Nate (20) who both retired, we were then well supported by our incoming batsmen, Liam (20), Chisel (15) and Mac (5) who was playing his first game of cricket. Setting Woolgoolga Rebels Hawks a respectable total of 1/96 we then took the ball and that’s where we really shined. Our fielding was strong and our bowlers found their lines immediately, oblivious to the fact that training was rained out and we haven’t met since mid December. Wickets were shared with results that Mitchell Starc can only dream about - Chisel 2/1, Jude 2/2, Mac 2/3 and Jaz 1/8. Though right bowling and sharp fielding we were able to restrict the opposition to all out for 33. Shout out to Mac for his first game ever and retiring and getting two wickets and to Chisel for his very solid return after a lot of time out with an injury. 2026 is looking like being the best one yet!
U16s
Bellingen/Dorrigo batted first. With extras the only batter to get to double digits it was always going to be tough for the inland lads. All bowlers contributed with tight bowling and a good spread of wickets. To their credit the final pair got the batting to 20 overs.
The Judes (JC- 31 off 45, JA- 16 off 32) obviously had some gaming or homework to do and reached the required total in the 13th over without loss.
As Boris Becker said ‘ I love the winning, I can take the losing , but most of all I love to play.’
4th Grade Gold
On a characteristically slow Toormina Oval, we were sent in to bat first with two new recruits for seniors in Phil and Jude Maunder.
Unfortunately it wasn’t a great start sitting at 2-0 after the first over, but we never panicked knowing the strength we had in the rest of the order. Zach and Phil stabilised the ship with a 32 run partnership and Phil went on to a classy knock of 41*
Then it was the hitting power of Jig and excellent gap-finding strokes of Percy that played the field like a fiddle and got us a crucial 60 run partnership in the middle overs.
Verity and Hunter were next to put together some handy runs while Rod peeled off 36 off 20 at the backend to take us to 178.
It was Edyn and Jude to kick off the bowling attack with good dot-ball pressure that resulted in two fantastic run outs by Percy giving us a big early advantage.
Woopi were looking stable at 2-42 but leave it to Ned for awesome tight bowling that set the scene for Zach to cartwheel middle stump twice and take a third for good measure.
Knowing we had a good total behind us and had already taken them down a few we didn’t feel the need to kill the game so shared the bowling around. Three tight consecutive overs from Edyn, Ned and Phil shut the door on Woopi and took the pressure off Jude for him to secure our 11 run win in the last over.
An all-round great team performance,
Go Sawty!!
4th Grade Blue
4ths Blue vs Diggers 7th Feb
Blue took on Diggers needing a win to keep up momentum and our place in the top 4.
Sawty won the toss and sent the opposition in. Bowling was excellent from all who got a bowl with some of our more experienced campaigners being asked to bowl long spells. If we can hold our catches watch out! Diggers were restricted to 101 off their 35 overs.
In our batting innings Paul top scored with 40no, supported by Scotty on 30no and Tim K with 18 to get the runs in the 25th over.
A vital win in the context of the season to keep us in with a shot to make the semis with only three rounds left to go.
3rd Grade
Bye
2nd Grade
Sawtell second grade played top of the ladder Woolgoolga. Winning the toss and batting first. It was another poor performance with the bat but Busby played a nice role in the middle order top scoring with 25.
All out for 70.
Woolgoolga started of shaky. With edges falling short they eventually got the runs 2 down
1st Grade
Sawtell 2Dayer vs Nana Glen
First week, was a lovely sunny day. Pitch and field looking nice. Another toss won, heads once again (not sure a coin is 50/50 at this stage).
Sawtell batting first.
Openers get off to a great start, 0/60ish at first drinks without many risks. Got to a great platform of 1/119 but a steady flow of wickets and series of poor shots gave the hosts a great chance of rolling us early. And they did, as we ended our innings at all out 227 after only 66 overs faced. Really missed out a 300+ run score with an early platform on a pretty friendly batting wicket.
Anyhow, we had 10 overs at their openers. The bowlers toiled but not clear chances say them finish the day on 0/22 roughly.
Second week saw our day for redemption. Our team chemistry and warmup felt a little bit underdone and off but none the less we went out to field/bowl with a good mindset.
Nanas top order not giving many chances early and scoring, not freely but without many risk on a better batting wicket than week 1.
Our spinners really toiling away for long periods throughout the middle of the day and throughout getting rid of the top and some of the middle order.
But an outstanding 2nd spell from Flynn Taylor, taking 5/4 after 4 overs, put the game to bed and the win for Sawtell. Nana all out for 160. Outstanding effort from the boys to hold on until given a chance to take the game on.
Tyh Murphy 59 (66)
Will Bailey 40 (64)
Flynn Taylor 5/52 off 11.3 overs
Trent Dierick 3/37 off 22 overs
T20 Gold
Semi Final t20 vs Colts
Another lost toss and we were once again asked to bowl first on another Richo turner. We bowled some really tight areas, with the wickets mostly shared around. Richie Gallichan got himself a bag of 3 poles. This followed up by Toby Baileys 4 overs for 6 runs and Adam Rollans cleaning up the tail with some serious heat, was enough to restrict colts to 48. Great effort lads.
With a few steady partnerships, and big Flynn Taylor smacking a couple around to polish things off. We were able to pull off an absolute demolishing, chasing the runs 3 down, with 11 overs in hand. Clinical effort from the boys at our fortress.
A massive shoutout to Chris Neal for rallying late on Thursday afternoon with storms around just to get us a game.
Hopefully we can get a large amount of support from players and supporters around the club to bring home some silverware next Thursday.
T20 Blue
The Blues had spent a lot of time doing the maths on what they needed to do to get in the Semis of the T20. A good win was needed with minimal batting outs.
Colts got off to a good start . While wickets slowly fell the total climbed . Colts all out for 105. Semis still possible for the Sawty Blues.
Cricket can be a mystery where best made plans get squashed by slow deliveries and good catches. The ducks lined up and the Blues weren’t able to recover. They walked off one by one and into next season.
Given that this is our second grade side and they were pushing for a place in the top 4 it is a great demonstration of the depth of our club. The Blues will be there supporting Gold in the final on Feb 19th.
