Sawty Cricket Round Up - Round 3
Round 3 was full of action for most teams with Under 10s and 2nd Grade having the bye. Great to see our young women players shining this week with Verity taking a key wicket in 3rds and Eva contributing in all aspects in 4ths and smashing a total in U12s. In U14s, Jasmine was deadly with 3 wickets from 4 balls.
3rds had a game for the ages, a real nailbiter, winning by one run. 1sts continue the perfect start to the season.
Thanks to the club members who have been able help with raffles Friday nights. This week is 3rd Grades turn. If you can help one night during the season it is a great way to support your club.
I must say I am impressed with the reporting skills of our captains and coaches. While Shakespeare missed the opportunity to watch and write about cricket by a hundred years or so (poor fella), I know he would be impressed by the sagas this lot write.

U12 Sawtell Sloggers
Sloggers players should be really proud of their efforts, only playing with 7 players and just missing out on the win against Urunga. Sawtell batted first setting a competitive 3/91 off 20 overs. Top scorer was Eva Maguire with 22 off 20 balls. Urunga got off to a good start being 62 at the 10 over mark, but the sloggers hung in to push them all they way to the 19th over. Bodhi and Levi both taking 2 wickets each.
U12 Sawtell Sixers
Despite being three players down, our Sawtell Sixes showed great spirit on Saturday with two under 10s bravely stepping up to fill the gap.
While the Sixes came away with victory – both teams were real winners displaying outstanding sportsmanship. Bello took it easy on our youngest players at the crease, and we happily returned the favour with the ball - even allowing an extra Uranga player a bat who would have otherwise missed out. Days like Saturday remind us what junior cricket is all about.
Under 14s v Nana Glen
Well done to our Under 14’s tonight who began their season with a comprehensive win over Nana Glen. Probably the ultimate game where every player contributed in one or more ways. Our opening batsmen got us off to as solid a start as I’ve seen since watching Hayden and Langer join forces, with Jude top scoring with 39 and Liam with a handy 28. Chisel finished off our innings with a handy 29 and we finished up with 3-137, a great effort for any team. From here Nana Glen began strongly, scoring the required run rate consistently for the first couple of overs until the ball was thrown to Leo. Here Leo worked his magic and scored two quick wickets, before Jasmine came on and got 3 wickets off 4 balls, which really slowed Nana Glen’s progress. A wonderful effort with bat and ball and our wickets were shared between many of our players with Nana Glen finishing up with 10-83. Special shout out to Jude who scored 39 as well as getting a wicket and a few catches as wicketkeeper. Great game tonight guys, it’s going to be a good season!
U16s v Macksville
After winning the toss and electing to bat, Josh d and Denzel went out to bat. Slowish first few overs saw the pressure on us and Denzel got out, Oakley looked good but got dismissed early so Busby H came to the crease. A 35 run partnership built the platform for Fin B, James W and Jude C to take us home with some great batting getting us to 96.
We knew this would be a close game as Macksville could bat. Cooper M and Oakley B opened the bowling and did a great job at restricting Macksville early. Through the middle overs James Weber and Jude Aspen each went at an economy rate of 2 and took a wicket putting even more pressure on Macksville. After needing 30 off the last 2 over Denzel W and James W bowled great lines and saw the team home for a close win. Always nice to beat Macksville in Macksville.
Good Win Sawty!
4th Grade Blue vs Macksville 25/10/25.
4th Grade Blue made the trip to Macksville to take on the Bulls. Macksville batted first. Sawtell picked up a few early wickets but some big hitting saw Macksville score 185. Pick of the bowlers was Mr President taking 3/18 and Paul and Scotty also taking 2 each. A steady fall of wickets just when partnerships were developing limited Sawtell’s score to 103 in reply. Top scorer was Scotty with a quick 41.
3rd Grade v Diggers
After winning the toss and electing to bat we had a solid start with the openers. Unfortunately, James Weber toed one early and got caught out early. After that wicket, James Karrasch and Josh de Groot steadied the ship and got the team to drinks at 1-63. James Karrasch got out for 37 off 58 after securing a 65 run partnership. None of the middle order got going but looked good at the crease. Josh de Groot went through 4 batting partners before getting out on 62. Luke Blackman and Rodney Sawaya steered the team home with a 45 run stand getting us to 172.
Elijah Carle and Fin bath opened the bowling and gave us an ideal start with Elijah bagging the first wicket. After that, diggers batted well and we’re cruising until Verity McDonald took a crucial wicket and Diggers headed into drinks at 2-100. Mike Keenan was unreal through the middle overs taking 2 wickets and dismissing their highest run scorer. Busby Hibberd and Rodney Sawaya then came onto bowl in which Busby Hibberd took 2 great wickets including Diggers best batter coming off back to back hundreds. Rod took a great wicket and was involved in a run out. Diggers really struggled through the middle overs but after their good start the game was always going to be close. We kept getting wickets and they kept scoring runs until it came down to us needing one wicket and diggers needing one run to tie. After Rod bowled a good Yorker which was dug out Diggers opted for the quick single to try and win the game, but Fin Bath Pounced on it and with a great throw finished off by Charles Hibberd We won the game by 1 run
Great win Sawtell!
1st Grade
An overcast cool sort of day. Home game on Richo 2 against the premiers. Having a few of our best XI out we knew it would be a tough game.
Once again flipped, has been heads 3/3 games but opposition skipper called tails, so we win the toss and again bat first. So far in previous games have scored 250+ in 40overs, but knew today would be a challenge with a better bowling side.
Started off well with the bat, 2/94 an over or 2 before drinks but limped to 4/96 at the break. Another wicket lost quickly after 5/99.
But a mature innings this time from the Tom Rawding 53 (52) and late hitting from again from Dave Angus 53 (47) saw us above 200 once again to 215.
Openers started well with the ball, Flynn Taylor and Will Bailey taking 2 wickets a piece against some aggressive opening batting. We had the visitors 5/67 at the break in a good session of bowling and fielding.
Our second 20overs in the field started off with low energy and bowling with plenty of wides but the boys were good enough to get the job done. Trent Dierick doing what he does best with the ball, mopping up the tail. The boys taking their chances to get the previous year premiers all out for 153.
Great solid win. Happy with an all round performance. A lot of starts with the bat again, which will hopefully turn into some big innings soon, bowling is coming along but need to work on accuracy and fielding quality and concentration for long periods is improving too.
1st grade finds themselves tied 1st undefeated so far. Bring on Woolgoolga next Sat!
Tom Rawding 53 (52), David Angus 53 (47), Trent Dierick 4/29 off 7, Will Bailey 2/23 off 8
