Sawty Cricket Round Up - Round 8
SAWTYCRICKET ROUND UP
ROUND 8
A few nailbiters this round. A last three wickets hattrick by Toby in our T20 Blue team gave him 6 wickets for the match and Woopi little chance. Our First Grade side continues to meet every challenge thrown their way as they find themselves on top of the ladder. Many of our teams have younger players who are learning each week and should come home strong in the back end of the season. All of our junior teams are in or close to the top four.
The subtle sledging has already started for the big match up this coming Saturday, with our two 4th grades going at it at Toormina Oval. If you’re bored with the Ashes, then come on down. The cricket might be average but the sledging will be brilliant. With 4ths Gold having to resort to AI for hope, the pressure is well and truly showing on one team.
This week Senior teams across the Coffs Harbour Cricket community are taking part in action against domestic violence. This is an initiative that may be expanded nation wide after our efforts. Senior teams will wear orange hats as a symbol of a brighter future for all.
As strong men who play a sport that relentlessly asks us to think about our reactions to our emotions and to respect each other, there are non better than us to lead this men’s issue initiative.
Following is the information from GRACE, NSW Cricket and President of Coffs Harbour Cricket Association.
‘Coffs Harbour Cricketers Take a Stand Against Gender-Based Violence
The Coffs Harbour Cricket Association is teaming up with GRACE, the Coffs Coast Domestic Family Violence Action Group, to take part in the Bowling Out Violence campaign in alignment with the global 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence campaign (25th of November – 10thDecember).
Throughout the period, local players will proudly wear orange hats - the colour symbolising a brighter future free from gendered based violence - to raise awareness and spark conversations about respect, equality, and safety in our community.
Coaches and captains will deliver messages to their teams highlighting the important role that sport can play in promoting positive attitudes towards women and girls, and challenging beliefs and behaviours that lead to violence. By uniting players, families, and supporters under a common cause, this collaboration aims to challenge attitudes that normalise violence and call on men to be role models for change in our community.
Coffs Harbour Cricket Association President Aaron Singh shared “We’re happy to be collaborating with GRACE, for 16 Days of Activism to raise awareness and promote zero tolerance of violence against women and girls. Sport has the potential to be a powerful space for cultural change by challenging sexist behaviours, language and promoting safety and respect for everyone.” Thank you, Coffs Cricket Association, for leading the way in the cricketing community and being positive role models for change!

U12s Sloggers
Sloggers took on the undefeated Diggers side and whilegiving a good account of themselves went down 5/124 to 57.
Highlights in the bowling innings were 2 wickets eachfor Bodhi and Oscar including a catch on the boundary for Bodhi.
Eva topped scored with 12 runs in the batting innings.
U14s
Sawty v Colts
The top order all got off to a good start but noone was able to go on with it past the teens. The team gave Colts a target of 80 for victory.
With Colts at 5 for 26 it looked like Sawty had a real chance but the tail wagged and wagged. Jai, Lincoln, Jasmine and Leo all took wickets but William B in Colts tonked a 36 to give his team a chance. Colts were able to hang on to the last ball getting enough runs to get the draw.
Everyone learns from the close ones, especially the draws when one little thing could have changed the game. Reflect on that, practise, and be ready for the next close one.
A very exciting game to be part of.
U16s
U16 Match V Macksville at Toormina Oval.
Macksville managed to gather 8 players, we had 9.
They won the toss and elected to bat. They had a good start with their first wicket falling at 30 runs, Jude C bowled with Jimmy taking the catch to start their collapse. We then went on to dismiss them for48 runs in total with wickets taken by Josh & Denzel both bowling 2/1 off 1over each, Jude Couzens 2/4 & Jaybien 1/13 both off 2 overs, the remaining bowlers all bowled extremely well but were unlucky to not get any wickets. There was a great catch taken by Jude A off Denzel’s first ball which was a bouncer but the umpire (Charles Hibberd) called it a controversial no ball, so the wicket didn’t count, much to the disappointment of all players, however Denzel got his revenge the next ball, getting the player out.
With a low target of just 49 to chase, Denzel and Jaybien opened with Denzel facing first. Bad decision on his part because he got a royal duck to start the innings.Jaybien however stuck around until the end with a score of 34 off just 21balls. Sadly we lost 2 other wickets Busby & Oakley but Josh finished it off with Jaybien to see the win in just 7 overs.
(President’s note: This won’ t be the last allegedly harsh call a bowler gets from an umpire, especially one as expert as Charles. Also very unlikely to change their mind, especially Charles. Suck it up, accept it. Just do what you did and turn around and ball the next ball.)
4th Grade Gold
Congratulations everyone who was involved in today’s victory over Urunga. This marked the fourth win of the season, still remaining undefeated.
After losing the toss and getting sent in to bat in damp conditions, John and Ben made light work off the opening bowler, remaining together until the 11th over of the Urungan bowling attack. This partnership ended with each facing 30+ balls, giving the middle order an easier introduction to the crease. Marto and Oakley came in at 3 & 4, and the show they put on was nothing short of spectacular. We made it to drinks at the scoreline of 2/45, before the duo parted ways with Marto putting on a graceful 25 with3 boundaries, whilst running up and down the pitch with Oakley who ended on 35with 3 more boundaries added to the total. A few more wickets fell, resulting in Jig and Rodney together in the 30th over, with 89 runs on the board. A quick22 off 18 including 3 sixes from Jig in the last few overs whilst accompanying Rod’s 41* off 18 (with 1 four and 5 sixes) helped steer the team total to looking like 146 after 35 overs.
With the ground have been fully dried out, some line and length bowling was needed to defend. Lincoln and Ned took the first spell, combining for 2/23 off the first 8 overs, after Ned’s shoe gave way. Verity and Lucas came on next, and still restricting the desired run rate for Urunga at a night total. The marvellous second spell between the pair took 3 wickets while only conceding 14 runs off 8 overs. This brought us to drinks after an over from Oakley and Zach with a score line of 5/50. Oakley put on a clinic, hitting the spots as ordered to. After absorbing all the pressure from Zach and Oakley, the blokes from Urunga tried to put their foot down as hard as Jig and Rod from the first innings, but fell short to Martos pace. The combination of Lincoln and Marto took a combined 6 wicket haul, with Marto only conceding 10. This brought an end to the innings, as we had bowled out Urunga for 98 after 28overs.
A huge congratulations to the team today, we backed each other up in the field and in spirits, making a nice healthy game. Once again, thanks to Kelly for scoring for the whole length and also to Hunter who umpired the first innings. There’s training on Tuesday afternoon and I hope to see you there. We’re in Toormina same time next week for a Sawtell 4th Grade, Sawy v Sawty.
Many thanks - Lucas and Ned
4th Grade Blue
4th Grade Blue vs Woolgoolga 29 Nov
Another close one was on the cards this week but unfortunately Blue couldn’t quite get over the line going down by 15 runs. There was another senior debut this week with Jasmine joining her dad Paul in the side.
Woolgoolga batted first setting 136. Sawty bowled and fielded well after the drinks break to keep the total within reach after a quick start from Woolgoolga.
Jonno (34) and Tim H (11) got the batting innings off to a good start and at drinks we were on par with the run rate. Some tight bowling from the Woolgoolga spinners slowed down the runs after drinks and despite a late valiant effort we fell 15 short of the total.
Despite not continuing our win streak this week -excitement is brewing for the upcoming Sawty Showdown against our littlebrother Gold team.
3rd Grade
Sawtell vs Woopi Mixed
It is with a very heavy heart I write this report. A game that was only ours to lose and we did.
To all the players, that put in 100% all afternoon, I say a huge thank you.
Tight bowling and smart fielding were on full display in the First innings. Hard to hit deliveries led to catches being taken. And this I must commend the team on this week. 'Catches win matches' and some difficult catches were taken. Mr Reliable Fin B took a 4 fa and the game ball home.
The chase to 168 started slowly but confidently. James K played some great strokes and was not happy with his premature exit to a sharp catch. The only 1 of 4 chances the guy held all day. Unlucky James. Peter T came in and found the pitch tricky with the irregular bounce. He batted through it and was on his way to a fine, if exhausting innings running with Denzel. Pete when he was given out, caught behind. He reckons it was all thigh.I don't comment on these things. Luckily.
Denzel went on to delight the crowd with an excellent50. The top order had us cruising to, what again, seemed like certain victory.
Liam and Chris went out and fought to the very last ball. Chris was run out attempting the drawing run.
Remember that empty sad feeling I woke up with. I think it's guilt.
A good captain recognises their mistakes and learns from them. It was a mistake to be at square leg when I should have been watching time and batting Elijah. It was also a mistake to go out and throw my wicket away knowing we needed so few runs.
I would expect more of a captain. Sorry.
I will try and rid myself of these feelings and the memory what happened on that afternoon. It will be difficult as I no longer drink.
2nd Grade
Sawty 2s played Nana on Saturday at Richo.
We won the toss and batted first. We had a couple of batsman with good starts with the bat. Unfortunately, no one went on to put a big score on. We got bowled out for 86.
We started off well with the ball. We stuck to our plans and nearly stunned ourselves with a famous win. In the end we didn’t get enough runs with the bat.
1st Grade
First grade at Richo on Saturday was the Jesse Buckle show. After our first loss of the toss this season, Consistent bowling in the first innings from the boys bowled Nana out for 161. With Jesse 4 wickets and Flynn 3 wickets. Our run chase started steadily with solid partnerships between Jesse and James, then Tom, before Jesse and the T dog secured our victory 3wickets down with 4 overs to go. Jesse finishing unbeaten 80*. Great team effort from the boys and it may be tough for absent skipper to break back into the side after that performance. On to next week
T20-Sawtell Blue
Sawtell Blue had the away game in Woolgoolga.
We lost the toss… again and bowled first. Toby Blinmanwas outstanding with the ball bringing us back into the game and taking 6wickets and a hattick to finish of the innings. Woolgoolga white finished with112.
We started slow with the runs but picked up our pace and won the game with Alex(51) and Luke(37) having a 78 run partnership.
First T20 win of the season.

T20- Sawtell Gold
The boys took on Woopi in the T20 on Thursday night. It was a struggle getting numbers together for the game but a huge shout out toa couple of the young blokes, Liam Snell and Fin Bath for coming for a game. This, along with a couple of AFL players Tom Neal and Kye Ingram was huge for our side.
We lost the toss and had to bowl first on a soft deck. With only 9 on the field for the best part of the powerplay, we fielded and bowled really well up top to restrict the run flow.
This continued throughout the innings with some classy bowlers doing a really good job as well as plenty of tidy work behind the stumps from Tom Rawding and Richie Gallichan.
We were set to chase 134 on a tricky deck, but our pommy import, Tom Rawding, made it look easy. His 60 not out, along with a couple blokes chipping in and a nice finish from Toby Bailey was enough for us to cruise home.
A tidy win like that should make it difficult for our skipper, Tyh Murphy, to force his way back into the side.
