Sawty Cricket Round Up- Round 6

SAWTY CRICKET ROUND UP

ROUND 6

Our club’s depth was on show over the weekend with games from Under 10s to Community Cup being played. While the real action is in Under 10s, our top senior players took on Kempsey Rovers in Kempsey for an action packed T20 game on Sunday. Community Cup is a state-wide knockout competition where each club fields their best team. Sawtell were dominant with some great efforts highlighted in the report following. I've posted some of Haley's great photos here but more will be in the website gallery.

You can see our top T20 players in action this Thursday 20th November at Richo Park starting at 6pm. It is Sawty v Sawty so there will be plenty of action about.

It is unusual to have a team with three people from the one family playing but our 4ths Blue fielded two families of three this weekend in the match against Nana Glen. Holly and Jonathon combined with their son Cooper. Jonathon scored a quick 35. Cooper and Holly bowled well and were unlucky not to get a bag full. Dad dropped a catch off both of their bowling to ensure no fravouritism.

Eva and Nate played with their dad Dan. All three had a bowl with Eva taking the family honors with 2 for 5 off 3 overs. Nate bowled right on the money and was unlucky while Dan snagged a cross bat hacker.

This coming weekend is the second and final First Nation Round. Teams are requested to hold an acknowledgement of country before each game. After our team's acknowledgement on the weekend it was great to have a conversation with the First Nation players in our team and talk about how they are connected to local First Nation people in our part of Australia.

This Saturday, 22nd November, senior grade teams are meeting at Richo Park after the games for a teams gathering. Our 1st and 2nd grade sides will be playing at Richo Park for the first time this season as Richo 1 comes back in to play. After your game head back to Richo where each teams captain (or their delegates) will give a match report on the days cricket. The recently refurbished canteen will be open and selling drinks and there will be pizzas provided as the afternoon progresses. The refurbished change rooms will also be open for inspection.

Have a great weekend of cricket.

Sawtell Suns match review : our little legends played another enjoyable game against the Coffs Colts at Jetty Oval on Saturday morning. Once again - with an abundance of keen players we helped out the opposition with fielders and bowlers to ensure everyone got an opportunity to play. Our players are starting to learn about fielding down on one knee and how to keep a straight bat. Improvements are seen each week with this group of great learners ! We must also make mention of the wonderful parents who are helping out so much with training, fielding, and padding up. You are a great group of people to work with!

Another great game of cricket! Sawtell Sixes delivered a spirited performance against Woolgoolga.

* Our brave under 10s, Henry M and Jem R, stepped up to help out and did a fantastic job. Henry remained not out on 2, and while Jem missed out with the bat, both boys snagged wickets to make their mark on the game.

* Jai L set the scene with an impressive opening

* Otis J had a standout day, posting his highest score while also taking a catch in the field. His confidence is clearly growing with each match.

* Huddy did a great job behind the stumps, keeping things tidy with the gloves.

The real highlight is the team's development. Matt T's leadership and vocal presence drove excellent communication in the field, with everyone encouraging each other and working together.

Well played, Sawtell Sixes!

U12s Sloggers

12s Sloggers vs Dorrigo. 15 Nov.

The Sloggers made the journey up the mountain to take on the Buzzards and didn’t come away empty handed with a nail biting 1 run victory.

Sunny skies saw the sloggers lose the toss and be put into bat scoring 95. Eva led the way with 25 off 31 with Oscar getting 12 off 20.

In the bowling innings the Sloggers took early wickets but strong partnerships in the middle of the innings saw Dorrigo edge close needing 8 to win off the last over. The sloggers kept their nerve to limit the over to 6 runs ensuring a mighty win.

There were strong performances throughout with Eva and Lucas getting their highest scores to date, Nate bagging his best bowling figures of 4/5 and Bodhi chipping in with 2 wickets. The most pleasing part was seeing the team really trying to put together some small things we have been working on at training and great team work and encouragement. Well done Sloggers!

U14s

Playing against Diggers on a warm evening in beautiful Toormina we lost the toss, and they decided that they were going to put on the pads and set us a total to chase. After a brisk start where their openers set a solid platform our bowlers started to tighten the screws. Conceding 40 off our first 10, we then tightened the fielding and kept Diggers to an achievable total of 70. Not wanting to take any chances, our batsmen set a  brisk pace, with Hunter setting the tone with a quick 26 before retiring. Jude (10) and Liam (17) then used their experience to bring us home with 6 overs to spare. Another solid effort with bat and ball which has seen us move up to outright second on the table. Well done!

4th Grade Gold

Congratulations to everyone today who represented Sawtell 4th Grade Gold, for our second win of the season. This wonderful team effort is showing promising signs of a move up the ladder.

After winning the toss and electing to bat, John B and Ben K opened, a steady partnership including a four from Ben helped them last to the fifth over where Ben was dismissed. With the ball softened, Brett M and John batted together scoring runs up until the 14th over. Lincoln and John batted for the following overs, where John retired after batting from the start up until the 27th, and Lincoln adding 12 to the total. With five overs remaining, Verity and Rod set a goal to give us a comfortable defending score. Their enormous 48 run partnership in the last 5 overs (with a handy 43 off 19 from Rod) gifted the team a final score of 142 after the 35th over.

After a quick downpour during the innings break, Zach and Jai bowled first with a fresh ball, resulting in Zach taking 3 wickets in the first spell, alongside Jai’s tight bowling which meant that Coffs were 3-28 off the first 7 overs. Liam and I were the next, some consistent bowling gave Liam a wicket and a final economy rate of 1.8 off his 5 overs, meaning that Coffs were at 4 for 56 at drinks break, still needing 87 to win off the last 18 overs. Lincoln and Verity had the next spell, where Lincoln once again proved he is an all rounder, taking 4 wickets, 2 of which were in a row and only conceding and economy rate of 3.5 off 4 overs. Verity picked up a wicket in her 5 overs, also keeping her economy rate under 4. With one wicket left to win, Ben was given the Kookaburra. Unfortunately he couldn’t take the last wicket, as Zach came onto bowl after Ben and snagged the final wicket with a catch taken by Brett, with the scorecard displaying the final innings score of Coffs all out for 91.

A big thanks to everyone that came out and played today, with a special mention to Kelly who scored the game and Hunter who umpired the first innings. Next week Gold will be in Woopi, I’m hoping to see everybody there

Many thanks - Ned and Lincoln

4th Grade Blue vs Nana Glen. 15 Nov

The Blues made their way out to Nana this week and despite the drizzle and rumbling took the win with our most accomplished performance yet. Some new faces were welcomed to the side this week with a few regulars enjoying some r&r. Holly discarded the score book to dust off her whites and Tim Heather also made the dash from Dorrigo to make his debut.

Mike capably took the toss with only 4 of the team at the ground initially to secure a bat first up. The blues set nana 164 to beat with the adults this time leading the way with Bob retiring on 40, Mike and Jonno getting 35 and Tim K 23 no.

The bowling innings saw a really consistent performance across the board. Bob, Eva and Mike taking 2 wickets each to limit Nana to 64.

A good all round performance from all. The Blues are really starting to settle into the grade and as a team.

3rd Grade

Our 3rds greeted the top 4 placed Woopi Rebels at Toormi oval. Things were looking good at 1 for 5 but  Woopi were able to accumulate 163, with their top order doing most of the damage. The middle order and tail were kept at bay by some fine bowling, especially 4 for 24 0ff 6.3 by Ben and a tight 1 for 5 off 5 by Elijah.

Woopi threw their top bowlers at Sawty for long spells and coveted the reward, with Ben 22, James 15 and Fin 18 giving a glimmer of hope. Sawty ground out the overs against good bowling to get to 81, well short of Woopi. Cricket is a funny game where if a few small, important things go otherwise the result can be quite different. Many of the juniors are developing and the team holds a few surprises for oppositions ahead.

COMMUNITY CUP T20 Knockout

On Sunday Sawtell’s best travelled to Kempsey to take on the Kempsey Rovers in the T20 knockout.  An ominous, dark cloud hung over the ground at the start of play threatening to unleash a storm. Unleash a storm it did, in the form of our batting with  lightening running between wickets, thundering sixes and cracking fours from Tyh 63 off 35, Tom 14 off 12, Trent 29 off 27 and Jesse 46 off 24(no). The intensity was carried right to the last ball by Jesse and a string of partners.

Kempsey came out to bat with confidence ready to chase down the 185 for victory. Kempsey’s parade was soon rained upon with some Category 5 bowling. Flynn fresh back from time with Joe Root and his mob, sent 3 of the top order batters back cheaply to their gazebo for shelter. Trent chimed in, after some glorious appealing, to knock off another top order batter. A late middle order partnership threatened for the Rovers until Jesse decided to back up his 46 by having a bigger day out than Ferris Bueller. Jesse took his second and third catches on the boundary. One from Tom to dismiss the Rovers best and one off Will to sink the Rovers. Not done yet, Jesse sent the Rovers to their local watering hole early by throwing down the wickets from 50m out, catching their last batter well short of his ground.

It is going to take a good team to beat our team as they are a well led, balanced and cohesive team with some key talent. Thanks to Hayley for the great photos.
