Sawty Cricket Round Up - Round 5

SAWTY CRICKET ROUND UP

ROUND 5.

This round was close to the perfect round. Every Sawtell team that played won. The only loss was in the Sawty v Sawty clash in U12s. Third Grade have been snatching defeat from the jaws of victory over the last 2 weeks but managed a win this week while going to the beach or sitting on the back deck, thanks to a forfeit from Nana Glen.

The perfect follow up to a hattrick is a ton. Congratulations on a crackin’ ton to Tom in our First Grade side. 123 off 81 is going at it pretty hard. Tom is playing his first season for our club and seems to be having a good time.

Our club, like other clubs in our area, has always had teams with parent and child combos. This week there were a few performances of note. Brett and Percy in 4th Grade Gold put on a 46 run partnership.  While Brett was just surviving while holding up his end, Percy cut loose up the other end, getting the score within one run of victory. In 4ths Blue, Jonathon and Cooper kept the scoreboard ticking over and combined well with the ball. Both took catches off each others bowling, Jon’s catch was a cracking snatch of a rocket.  Captain Dan was able to bat with both Eva and Nate in the one game. As the last batting pair and needing 13 runs to win Nate was able to calm Dans nerves and encouraged him to play his shots, especially the big six over long on to bring up the win. Charles and Buz sat on the couch together and claimed a win in 3rds. There are a few other family combos that I’ll report on over the next few weeks.

Starting this Saturday, 15th November, Cricket NSW is having two First Nations Rounds..  The first Australian International Team, in 1868, was an all Indigenous Team. Aboriginal people have been playing traditional games on this land for 65000 years or more. Around Sawtell the Gumbaynggirr People would have played games. I have been told that, not far from Richo Park,  on the land near Coronation Ave and Sawtell Public School the Gumbaynggirr People gathered for games. On behalf of the Sawtell Cricket Club I’d like to pay my respects to any Elders associated with the club and acknowledge any Aboriginal players. Please know that all cultures add richness to our club but your ancient culture adds a caring for each other and a connection to the lands on which we play that is unique and deeply valued. Cricket is an all-inclusive sport where any form of racism will not be tolerated

Teams are asked to hold a barefoot circle before matches over the next 2 rounds and hold an acknowledgement of country. The acknowledgement should be offered to any first nations players who would like to do it, otherwise captains and coaches can do the acknowledgement.  Of course if any First Nation people, who have been given permission to offer a Welcome to Country, are present they could do the welcome.

The following links from Cricket Australia have great information about the First Nations  Rounds and Acknowledgement to Country.

U10s

The Suns played another great game on the weekend and showed more progress with fielding and running between wickets . We welcomed Ty and Ollie to the team . Ty took our first proper catch of the season and Ollie smashed his first free hit for four ! Well done boys ! Imogen was captain for the day and made several excellent strategic decisions - bowling first with a strong wind 💨 off the coast . This wind created difficult conditions for all , but the young suns didn’t hesitate or complain. These future first graders stuck to the task as hand and played with a smile 😃- just like us parents who are so proud of them. Sunny was BOG with excellent hand eye coordination. Well played Suns !

U12s Sixers

Great day in Sawtell Local Derby on Saturday where our under 12s teams had an exciting rematch!

The Sixers showed tremendous improvement since the teams last met, with the victory coming from an outstanding all-round team performance.

The fielding was particularly impressive, with the team executing three run outs. The energy and commitment in the field set the tone for the day.

Some Highlights were:

- Walter once again came agonisingly close to claiming a hat trick (one day, mate!) and was delighted with smashing his first ever four!

- Will F produced a composed and solid batting display, showing great technique and shot selection.

- Huddy had a memorable day, reaching retirement after cracking his first four!

The day reflected the kids' hard work at training and their growing confidence as a unit.

Great to see such improvement and team spirit. Well done to both teams - bring on the next match!

U14s- DNP

U16s v Colts

A game where everyone contributed. With Sloggers at 4 for 24 the game could have been quite different but the middle order got in to the groove. Henry with a solid 22 from 25, Denzel doing his thing with 53 off 33, a flurry from Busby with 14 and a  swift 15 from 16 from Josh saw a total of 137 set for Colts to win.

Tight bowling was the key and it is what was delivered.  James, Cooper, Finlay and Denzel were miserly from their 2 overs each. Only two batters from Colts put up any resistance. Colts eked out 70 runs from their 20 overs but well short of Sawty. Congrats on a fine 50 from Denzel, who continues to improve in juniors and in senior grade cricket.

Denzel celebrates a sterling 50.

4th Grade Gold

Congratulations everyone on Sawtell 4th Grade Gold for our first win of this season, there were many standout performances today which led to this victory.

After losing the toss and put in to bowl, Edyn and Liam carved through the top and middle order with some great consistent bowling hitting the top of off, putting us ahead at 6/10 after the first eight overs, Edyn taking four of those and Liam taking two in a row. Diggers fought back, with a 40 run retiree, helping to give them a final total of all out for 77 after only 23 overs.

We lost a few wickets at the start of our innings, but Brett and Peter steadies our innings with a 28 run partnership. It looked to be a steady win from here on, with Percy playing his second senior game coming in next. An extremely skillful knock of 21 off 33 with a four and a five (no wide) whilst batting with his Dad brought us to 4/77 with Ben walking out. A swift leave to a wide ball brought us to the end of our chase, in just the 23rd over.

A big thanks to everyone that played today in our first win, and a special thanks to everyone who scored and umpired today.

Many thanks - Ned K

4th Grade Blue v Urunga

4th grade blue bagged the win in a close, evenly matched game played in great spirit vs Urunga. We have been close this season and were thwarted by the weather last round, so this was a great way to get off the mark.

With that in mind and a renewed appreciation for the BOM weather forecast of a possible storm Sawty won the toss and sent the opposition in with little chance of the pitch condition changing.

A consistent fielding and bowling performance saw Urunga set 145 for victory. Highlights include Heinz ct Heinz x 2 even with the younger one threatening to throw down his dad’s wicket.

Our batting innings saw some partnerships form and big hitting, but with wickets also falling consistently an exciting finish was on the cards. Sawty Blue prevailed, taking the win in the second last over.

Our junior players are starting to really settle in to senior cricket and are making valuable contributions each match with the older heads steering the ship when required.

Congratulations to all other senior teams/grades with all taking the points this round. Go Sawty.

3rd Grade

Won on forfeit.

2nd Grade

Another great win at richo. Our bowlers bowled perfect line and length getting the opposition 7-49 at drinks. Brayden Levy looking very promising coming back into the team, was bowling absolute gas. Joy with a 4fa , taking poles and making the batters leave the balls on their stumps

It was a very tough pitch to bat on and our batters we're battling. However we got stuck in and got the job done with Brayden’s identical brother Zac Levy making another game wining knock and top scoring the batting with 39 not out.

Always great to win at the home ground.

Zac and Captain Alex wander off after steering the 2nds team to victory.

1st Grade

Made the trip up the mountain to play at Dorrigo against Bellingen. We were worried about the weather forecast in Dorrigo as you usually get a bit more than predicted.

Hardest pitch known to man, felt like the M1 with a light sprinkling of grass. Great toss to win again. For those playing at home, 5/5 tosses won, 4/5 being heads.

Obviously batting first.

We lose Will Bailey first over walking across a straight one, leg stump contact. 1/0. A few solid partnerships early on saw us 2/124 at 20 over mark. Plan was to reach close to 300.

We lose the skipper 74 (61) trying to push one to the offside for a single (not his playing style FYI) snicked off.

Luckily Tom Rawding was still mistiming everything to the boundary, but was undone by an absolute blinder on the fence full pace and full stretch dive ending him on 123 (81) with 7x6, 6x4. Congrats on your first hundred with Sawtell!

The rest of the middle to lower order chiming in with a few runs. But seeing us all out for 273 in the 39th over.

We started well in the field and bowled fairly accurate. They had a few early partnerships but the team stayed focused and stuck to our plan, with consistent bowling and patience forcing mistakes from the batsmen. Sticking to the , partnered with taking our chances, gave us the win.

David Schutt, and Tom Rawding bowled well in the middle overs, with Will Bailey the mop this week taking a few late. Richie Gall also bowling some handy maidens to a few of their best bats. This saw them all out for 122.

A huge win of 151runs.

Tom Rawding 123 (81)

Tyh Murphy (c) 74 (61)

Tom Rawding 3/24 off 8

David Schutt 3/24 off 6

Really hard to pick who our man of the match was this week.

Congrats to Tom Rawding on a superb match, really showing his quality.
