SAWTY CRICKET ROUNUP - ROUND 4
SAWTYCRICKET ROUND UP
ROUND4
Bowled, bowled, caught …..that’s what the scorebook shows for Mick’s cracking hattrick in 3rd Grade this week. You’ll need to grab a beverage to get you through the full report by Charles in the captain’s match report that follows.
Most of the senior rounds were abandoned due to rain or lightening.
Our juniors showed some great courage this round, some having their first game in grade and some putting their hand up for the tough stuff. Others showing great sportsmanship. The kind of stuff that makes them grow as cricketers and as young humans.
The Friday night raffles are powering. Players and their families give up 2hours from 5.30 to 7.30. Very generous people are buying our tickets as well as Joker Poker tickets. The chance to win $25000 seems attractive. Please try to make it to help out at least once in the season, when your team is rostered on. It’s actually a fun evening.
On a sadder note, teams wore black arm bands this week and had a minutes silence to show respect and solidarity with the family of the young Victorian cricketer who lost his life doing what he loved. It’s a reminder to all of us to wear the safety gear, train to build skills and to look after each other. 4th Grade Gold had an even more relevant reflection, after the Macksville captain spoke about Phil Hughes.

Sawtell Suns Under 10s vs. Digger cc - November 1.
The Sawtell Suns Under 10 team took to the field at *Jetty Oval* for a match that turned out to be a great experience for all. The weather may have been patchy, but the enthusiasm and spirit of the Suns shone through.
With the Diggers CC needing a couple of extra players, great sportsmanship was displayed by Henry and Jem joining the opposition, helping balance the numbers.
The Suns, despite being a young team and still brand new to the game, showed how much they'd grown. After only two matches, the improvement was pleasing. Watching them work together and being so positive was a joy to be part of.
*Archie* and *Imogen* were award winners for the day ,putting in performances that were beyond their years.
*Imogen*, in particular, was on fire with the bat. She played several successful hook shots, showing a great eye for such a young player. Her confidence at the crease was impressive.
*Archie* showed his resilience by batting , bowling and keeping with a broken arm in a full-arm cast.
The progress of the team is a direct result of their positive attitude and learning mindset. They have learnt about backing up in the field, running out players, running between wickets and focusing on their target when bowling. These young cricketers are picking up the game quickly andenjoying every minute of it.
A huge thank you 🙏 to all the parents who come out each week to support our budding cricketers. Your encouragement, help with equipment and coaching support, is invaluable.
Go Suns!
U12 Sawtell Sloggers vs Woolgoolga Rebels Dolphins. 1st Nov
Great composure, execution of skills and courage saw the sloggers get home in a terrific game played at Woolgoolga in damp conditions. Sawtell bowled first with Woolgoolga setting a challenging 4/83. Oscar James Chow was the pick taking 2/10 off 4 overs and Lucas taking his first ever wicket.
In the batting innings the Heather boys, Bodhi and Eli lead the team home with great planning and composure to knock off the total, ably supported by Xander who despite coping a couple of body blows didn’t give in and saw off the Woolgoolga fast bowler. Bodhi top scored with 29 no off 26balls with Eli scoring 11 no off 31 balls to take the win.
U12 Sawtell Sixers v Urunga
Saturday Wrap Up
Sawtell Sixes took on Urunga at Toormi this weekend in what proved to be another fantastic day of cricket (not to be mistaken with Bello who we played at Urunga last week 🤦♀️).
Urunga came with numbers across all age groups, both boys and girls, and their sportsmanship made for excellent competition throughout the day.
Key Highlights:
* Walters came agonisingly close to a hat-trick
* Jai & Percy running between the wickets turning twos into threes
* Huey was the standout courageously stepping up to open the batting against Lenny, one of the region's fastest bowlers
A great all-round performance saw Sawtell Sixers claim victory in what was a thoroughly enjoyable match. Well done to both teams!
Under 14s
Bye
U16s v Macksville
As all days, Friday afternoon saw a good day for cricket.
Busby won the toss and elected to have a bat on a beautiful green top synthetic wicket.
Joshua D and Busby opened and both got away to solid quick starts. There was some big hitting between runs with Buz losing a ball in the bush in the 2nd over. He was the first to depart, holing out to backward point attempting another cut boundary. Josh D put on a batting exhibition with shots to all parts of the field. He went on to make 50 off 35. A great knock that set the team total up. Denzel was the other big contributor with a quickfire 24 off23 in the late overs.
Sawtell ended up making 153 runs with everyone contributing, right down to 10.
The bowling was shared around with all of the boys bowling well. Fin B brought up another hat trick ball which seems to be a common occurrence for him. Jude A helping him out with consecutive catches. Josh D, Oakley and Jude C all picked up wickets. Special mention to Oak for dismissing Jacka who is always fast scoring and dangerous.
We cleaned them all up for 64 runs, noted they only had 8players.
4th Grade -Gold
Unfortunately we had to abandon our game due to the weather, but we were not short on great bowing performances. It started with a great consistent opening spell with Hunter and I, snagging a wicket and only conceding 18 runs in the first 9 overs. Oakley and Percy were next, a few missed opportunities in the field led to less wickets taken than hoped, but overall an amazing effort by the two. Lincoln and Liam bowled the next spell together, bringing us to drinks with the score line of 2/64.
Whilst on the break, the rain came down, leaving us to return to the field with minimal precipitation, but a wet pitch and out field. From here on, the rain only intensified, leaving Rodney and the Macksville umpire with no choice but to end the game early, with a final score line of4/113.
I would like to congratulate Jai and Percy on their first senior games this season, and everyone else who came down for the game.
Many thanks – Ned

Sawtell and Macksville 4th Grade reflect on the passing of the young Victorian player , Ben Austin, as well as Phil Hughes.
4th Grade Sawtell Blue vs Colts. 1st Nov
Like all other games in the grade unfortunately the game was abandoned due to adverse weather, which was a shame seeing how well the team was constructing a good total. Sawtell won the toss and batted, getting in 30overs to be 3/144 before the lightning struck. Paul top scored coming in at 3with 40 retired off 48 with Tim K contributing 23 and Mitch K 18. After having a good platform, Dan8 and Mike 20 were ready to unleash when stumps were called.
3rd Grade , Sawtell vs Bellingen - Charles
If you were planning on seeing some exciting top quality cricket during the Ashes this summer, you would have decided to save your money if you were at Toormi Oval on Saturday. You are not going to see a better 20overs delivered by any team this season.
Losing the toss, Bello decided to have a bat.
To their misfortune this set into action a series of events rarely seen on the pitch.
With young blokes on devices, they quickly informed us on statistics suggesting some big hitting. 🙄
With 3 players on season debut, the squad started a little tentatively. Eden and Fin B opened the attack and good bowling was met with a Bello 'cross bat' onslaught. Maybe the young blokes were right.
The Sawty squad however, quickly clicked into gear with some excellent fielding, cutting the run rate. Fin was finding edges, his old man, Matthew B, another season debut, was looking sharp in the slips. Eden was roping in her swing attack and took the vital first wicket. The team was 'upand about' continuing the positive attitude of last week's win. That's right ,win.
What happened next was truly once in a lifetime cricket.
Mick K came on from the Gardens end and was straight away a problem for the batters, taking a wicket in his second over. Bello got no relief from our new South African import Peter T when he started from the Southern end either. Quickly dismissing a batter.
Tight lines and cross bats, something had to give. And it did. In spectacular fashion.
In his third over Mick took a beautiful hat trick. Congratulations again. Two balls that blew middle and leg stump out of the ground and a third taking a nick through for a regulation keepers catch.
Mick was ecstatic. The team was ecstatic. The old blokes were gasping. Hands and cores were sore with the amount of solid high 5s and even a couple of chest bumping high 10's being handed out. It took some time to settle.
The next batter wiped the tears from his eyes and walked to the spot. He asked for centre. Not sure why he bothered.
Peter came back to give us the ultimate 'hold my beer' moment as he delivered two of his own missiles to dismantle the stump set up and then have a catch taken off his last ball. He was humble but his face said 'stoked' all over it. The team were stoked to have him.
Bello were shell shocked.
Verity and Jimmy W were tasked with tidying up the tail. And that they did. Jimmy took a spectacular catch, diving forward to take the ball and inch off the ground off Veritys bowling.
The Sawty squad were quiet. Still reflecting on what they'd just been involved in. Once in lifetime cricket.
All done before drinks. 80 runs.
Johnny B and Jimmy W opened the batting solidly, facing off the openers. Johnny was unlucky to be caught at point after solid contact. Jimmy quickly followed after top edging and a great catch taken at gully. Peter W and Fin B were paired next, and were solid. Making good inroads to the total. Fin was free wheeling and Pete had found his zone with a consecutive 4 and 6.
We were on our way to victory.
The sky lit up and with an almost immediate crack of thunder, it was all cruelly taken away from us.
The game would be judged a draw.
Bello were performing some kind of Pagan 'Thankyou' Ceremony to the weather gods. This included hugging and drinking of ceremonial ale. They had dodged the Sawtell Locomotive andthey knew it. They couldn't believe their luck.
We were devastated. The greatest 20 overs delivered this summer would not be rewarded on the scoreboard.
Another no pointer snatched from the jaws of victory.
Teams will be watching their backs though.
Let's go Sawty! 🏏
2nd Grade
Unfortunate lads can't do anything about a wash out. Batting can improve, however they were a good bowling side.
Let's get down to training on Tuesday and Thursday. The bowling machine will be out both days.
Let's get ready for next week 💛💙

Sawtell and Woopi 2nds hold prematch minutes silence for the passing of the young cricket player in Victoria.
1st Grade
A bit of rain around this week but conditions cleared up to get the game underway. Pitch was slightly softer than previous weeks at Richo2, but would play pretty well against Woolgoolga Rebels.
The plan was to bowl first, hopefully bowl them out quickly and chase the runs down hopefully before the rain came midway through the arvo.
Once again skipper won the toss, was tails this time. So tally so far is 3 heads and 1 tail. Not quite the “tails never fails in New South Wales” prophecy once spoken about.
Stuck to our game plan of bowling first. 2 quick wickets with patient bowling did the trick. A significant partnership then followed of54 runs which took the visitors to the break and a few overs afterwards.
Our openers economies were great with Will Bailey 0/12 off8. Our Pommy import Tom Rawding with 1/28 off his 8, with 6 wides. An improvement on his 9 last week.
A quick flurry of wickets saw the visitors losing 4/9 before the lightning first stopping play and then the rain settling in.
We stuck to our game plan but unfortunately ran out of time. Woolgoolga 6/84 after 29.2 overs.
The boys bowled good tight areas, with a few tough chances missed but would’ve been great catches if taken. Fielding is definitely closeto where it should be.
Trent “the mop” Dierick 2/18 off 7
David Schutt 2/20 off 4.2 (only 5 wides, improvement on his15 last week)
