Sawty Cricket Round Up - Round 2

This week was the first full round of the season. 4ths and 14s did not play and 16s was stopped by lightening but all other games went ahead. A strong message was sent to the other clubs with a good win by our 1sts and a nail biter win for 2nds in a game in which they were the underdogs. 3rds were gritty until the end. Brilliant to see Sawty V Sawty in U 12s. U10s were still buzzing at training this week after what, for many players, was their first game of cricket. The club cannot thank enough the coaches and captains for the time and work that do each week.

SPONSOR OF THE WEEK - SAWTELL HOTEL ( Major Sponsor)

UNDER 10s - Phil

Well done to our Sawtell and Nana Glen teams today - that was so much fun ! Thank you to the parents for your support on the field and the sidelines - there was lots of support that went into our little people today.

Please pass this message on to your kids: ‘well done for your efforts today , you listened so well and learnt so much.’ All of the parents are looking forward to the rest of the season.

UNDER 12s- Paul

A strong start to the under 12’s this weekend with the Sawtell Darby taking place down at Toormina Oval to kick off the season. Both teams began the game enthusiastically with great sportsmanship and encouragement of their fellow players.

Sawtell Sloggers opened the batting and finished with a very healthy 4-103 including wonderful knocks from Jai who scored 21 and Levi with 16. When Sixers came into bat it was always going to be a hard run chase and they finished up with 6-71, with Percy not out 18 top scoring and Matthew getting 11. Well done to Oscar who got 2 wickets in his first game and shout out to our captain on the day Xander, who was 5 not out from 41 balls in the end, a wonderful effort! A great game of cricket played the way cricket should be played: fairly, with encouragement and with our players backing their ability and having a red-hot crack. Well done!

U16s

A great start with the bat, especially from Denzel, Jimmy and Henry. Unfortunately, the game was abandoned with Sawtell in a strong position but the lightening rules are clear and are there to keep everyone safe.

3rd Grade - Rod

After winning the toss and electing to bat first we looked good with a couple of soilid openers at the crease.  Unfortunately, a great bit of fielding with a direct hit running John out.

As the innings went on, none of our top order could go on with it. All had starts and looked very comfortable.

At drinks we were 6-64. Bob A and Rod S at the crease and looking to back their strength.  An 87 run partnership by these two players putting up a defendable total.

With both our opening bowlers carrying injuries not the best way to start, but they were determined to get us off to a good start. Liam unlucky not to get a wicket and Hunter snagging 2 in their opening spells. We had our chance but just couldn't take them. They batted freely and took plenty of risk in the run chase and it paid. They passed us 3 down in the 21 over.

They had a day out with the bat. Sometimes that's all it is. But the Sawty fight all the way to the end is what was so impressive.  The never die attitude.

Training Tuesday 5-5:30pm onwards, please get down and keep working on bowling good lines and lengths, that helps us to set fields. Batting, let's get plenty of bat on ball and keep the confidence up.

I believe the most important part of cricket is fielding,  so let try and work hard on that part of the game. It's one part we can all do together and improve.

Go Sawty!

2nd GRADE - Alex

First win of the season a great feeling and plenty more to come.

A wrap from yesterdays performance.

Really happy with our composure and mindset yesterday, lads. When the other team was on top with the bat, no one panicked or had a negative attitude. We trusted the plan, adjusted our field placements and bowling, and in the end got the reward. Once we had that breakthrough wicket from Ben, we didn’t let them get back on top. We bowled well, fielded well, and got them 8 for 26 in the final session. A great confidence booster for our bowlers and shows us we can be a top team with the ball.

We can always improve our fielding, it stood out again this week, but it was much improved from last week. We’re only going to get better and better.

Highlights of the game:

Ben taking key wickets when we needed them, leading the bowling attack with a handy 4-fa.

Always a team morale booster when our opener takes a wicket in the first over. Denzel did a job with the ball and backed it up with a fantastic opener's knock, steady batting through a rough patch, and putting on a game changing partnership.

Zac backed up his runs from last week, finishing just 1 run shy of 50. Someone had to score runs and he was the man for the job. Played a proper innings and helped us reach our target.

Again, very happy with our efforts on the weekend. Let’s get down to training on Tuesday and Thursday and keep improving as a team💙💛

1st GRADE- Tyh

The boys were worried about the game going ahead during our Friday raffles (record profit for the club that night).

Won the toss this week against Diggers 18/10. Was heads again 2/2.

Pitch was pretty dry. A fair bit of greenery on top. Makes it a better true batting wicket on the North Coast. Batting first. New ball doing a bit early from Diggers and the first 20 overs the pitch was quite slow and hard to drive on.

Top 4 getting 20s, 2/80 at 20over mark.

Team chat was happy with anything close to 200. Ended up with 250+ 2 weeks in a row.

Thanks to Dave Angus with 50 (26). Kept bowling on his pads, obviously never seen him bat before. And Toby “Moose” Bailey with 44* (47) seeing us through. Great attacking batting with the blade but also the running between wickets.

Quite happy with the score, we set out to field. Diggers compiled a few decent partnerships, a few players getting quick runs, steady flow of wickets from our bowlers. A cracking diving catch in the gully from David Schutt during the middle overs helping us reign in their score to 8/175 after 35overs. DLS win for us due to rain and bad light at the end.

Tom Rawding with a debutant display with bat 28 (20) and a wicket bowling sharply.

All in all happy with batting performance as a unit, but disappointed to see players getting starts and not going on with a huge score. Okay bowling but many wides and okay in the field. Still plenty to improve upon but moving in the right direction as we take on the reigning premiers Nana Glen next week.
