Sawty Cricket Round Up 7

SAWTYCRICKET ROUND UP

ROUND7

The T20 competition started this week. Our club has our1st Grade and 2nd Grade sides entered in the comp. There was no better way to start the competition than for our two teams to bash it out on the refurbished Richo 1 pitch. The depth of talent in our club was on show, with 1sts not getting it all their own way as our younger 2nds side brought their skills to the contest. Keep watching the T20 draw but most Thursdays arvos from 6pm will see a match played at Richo Park. If our junior players have finished their homework, they could benefit from watching our senior players in action.

The senior grades had a gathering of teams after the game last Saturday. Captains gave a summary of the matches and highlighted some good efforts.

A few thank yous were gratefully delivered:

* Rod and Kelly, one of our sponsors, at Old Skool Pizza for donating the pizzas to munch on.

* Kelvin and Chris for their work on the rebuild of Richo 1 pitch.

* Jodi from Coffs Harbour City Council for overseeing the planning and funding of refurbishment works for the canteen, change rooms, toilets , external building upgrade and providing a new container for our gear. Rod and Kelly were key links between Jodi and our club providing suggestions and adding the finishing touches.

* Rod, Dan and Paul for cleaning the old container and decking out the new gear container.

* The committee was also introduced to the gathering. These are the people, along with coaches and captains, who volunteer their time to organize and support our club so we can all enjoy the game we love. The full committee is listed on our website at the following link.

U10s

Under 10' Suns played against Nana Glen Lizards at Len Towells Oval on Saturday morning. Nana Glen had plenty of players so we mixed up the teams a touch and had a great contest . Our Suns continued to grow and learnt when to run and when not to run . More balls landing on target each week and a few smashed boundaries from Ollie this week . Awards went to Wilder, Sunny and Ollie. A shout out to Jay from Nana Glen who really knows how to run a fun game for young cricketers.

U12 Sixers vs Woolgoolga

High Street Oval

A warm morning rolled in off the coast, bringing that familiar salt air from the ocean across High Street Oval. With a touch of still hanging around, conditions were perfect for cricket — the kind of day where the outfield smells like summer and the boundary is busy with grazing kangaroos.

After winning the toss, the Sixers chose to bat and worked their way to a competitive 97, despite some late pressure from Woolgoolga’s crafty spinners.

Percy, coming in through the middle order, played one of the shots of the day — almost clearing the rope square of the wicket on a boundary big enough to qualify as a small national park. Even the kangaroos shuffled back a metre.

Otis and Huey were standouts, showing massive improvement in their batting and especially their running between the wickets. On a ground nearly MCG-sized, sharp singles were the difference, and they executed beautifully.

A big welcome to Oaky on debut. His first outing  bat was heartbreakingly short — slipping on an imaginary banana skin at the non-striker’s end from the first ball and heading back to the sheds quicker than Zac Crawley. Plenty more cricket in him though.

With warm coastal air and helpful overheads, the Sixers’ bowlers settled quickly. The line and length were disciplined, the pressure constant, and the wickets arrived steadily.

Oaky bounced back superbly with the ball, steaming in with pace and determination — a brilliant response after his unlucky start.

The Dolphins struggled to build any partnerships and were eventually bowled out for 37, giving the Sixers a commanding 60-runvictory.

Special Mentions. A huge thank you to Henry Martin, who stepped up from the U10s. With him in the side, we had more Martins than Eric Clapton has guitar riffs, and he slotted in like a seasoned pro.

A comprehensive team performance: strong batting contributions, disciplined bowling, and a clear lift in confidence across the group.

A warm morning, salt air, kangaroos on the rope, and a big win — not a bad way to start the weekend.

Well done again, boys. Every week you’re getting better, stronger, and smarter.

U12s Sloggers

Won on forfeit.

U14s

After arriving at the grounds in Woolgoolga we spent the opening minutes acknowledging country as part of First Nations Round, and focusing on the lands that we were about to play on and the role that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have played in looking after these lands  for 65000 years. We then won the toss and elected to bat. Woolgoolga came out strong and kept us to a modest total of 6-73, with Jude scoring 12, Percy 10 and Liam top scoring with 18 . When we got the ball in hand we had a strong start with exceptional fielding. Liam finished with 2-4 and Jude with 1-8 and Lincoln made two runouts and Hunter took two catches. However in the end we simply didn’t have enough runs to defend, with Woolgoolga finishing with 5-74. Well done to all of our players, particularly with our fielding. We made Woolgoolga earn every run.

U16s v Bello

Sawtell’s bowling didn’t give Bello a chance to develop partnerships. Only one Bello batter reached double figures. Jude and Cooper both snagged a pair. Bowlers were supported by 6 great catches and a run out. The Judes opened the batting and  faced some great bowling from Mollie from Bello, dismissing them both. Cooper and Finn had somewhere to go and reached the required runs in the 13th over. Finn’s two cracking 4s to finish the innings was a fitting conclusion to a dominant performance .

4th Grade Gold

Congratulations everyone today from this amazing team win today in Woopi. That’s our third win of the season, still remaining undefeated.

After winning the toss and choosing to bat, the father son team of Marto and Percy lasted to the 12th over, with Marto contributing25, being today’s top scorer for Sawtell 4ths Gold. Jig came in and put up a total of 17 runs including 2 fours and 1 six Liam came in next, who was then followed by Zach who made a nifty 16 runs including a four. Percy’s monster of an innings came to an end after he lasted to after drinks break, finishing with11 runs to his name. The Woopi pitch had other plans for our lower order, and the local bowling attack took 6 wickets in 7 overs, giving Lucas and Ned 10overs with no wickets other than them left. A final partnership of 11 brought the innings to an end, where we finished with all out for 110 on the board to defend.

Zach and Ned opened the bowling together, where Ned took 2 for 10 off 5 overs. A combined spell with Jig and Lucas took 2 wickets each, brining us almost to the drinks break, with Woopi on 6-66, needing 44 off the remaining overs. Ben put on his best bowling attack, snagging a well deserved wicket after a consistent spell. Ned was put on again, taking two wickets in an over to end the innings in the 23rd over, with Woopi all out for79.

A big thanks to everyone that came out today, a special one to Kelly for scoring and to Hunter who umpired and filled in on the field. Enjoy the pizza tonight at Richo, and training is on Tuesday afternoon as usual. 4ths Gold will be in Toormina against Urunga next game where I hope to see everyone come down again.

Many thanks - Ned and Ben

4th Grade Blue vs Diggers. 22nd Nov

 The Hunter Lynch game.

Blue like to take them close and this time grabbed the win on the second last ball of the match at Jetty oval. Senior debuts this week for Bodhi and Eli Heather joining their dad Tim in a Sawty shirt.

Sawtell lost the toss and were asked to bowl. Diggers setting 150 to win.

Sawtell paced the batting innings to perfection with good contributions from Paul, Scott and Mike. But the star of the show was Hunter. Not only did he keep wickets and bowl, but he opened the innings and carried his bat - remaining 59 not out and hitting the winning runs to lead us home with the points this round. Not bad from one of our juniors in his first year in seniors and u14s.

Excitement is brewing for the Sawtell showdown in a couple of weeks time - but first we come up against Woolgoolga this week who pipped us first round, which should be another good close game.

Hunter carried his bat for the innings scoring 59 not out.

3rd Grade

3rd Grade - vs. Dorrigo Buzzards
Tough trip up the mountain for 3rds.
Bum steer for a couple, one apparently into 2's and the Locomotive was down to 7.
Winning the toss, we had a bat. Mostly in the vain hope that someone else might turn up. Bob even called a local mate to see if he wanted a game. No luck.
John B and Jimmy W opened. John off to a slashing start with a couple beating the formidable slips line up. John luck ran out though, being dismissed not long later. Jimmy showed some great strokes for not much reward with the Buzzards fielding being super tight. Some might say 1sts tight. (I'll leave that there). There was a great partnership between Mr Reliable Fin B and  Big Bird Jude C. The young blokes batted valiantly, looking like they were batting for a draw on the last day. They  held off the attack till drinks. Not many runs. Jude actually managed to score a duck off 22 balls. An achievement in itself. Still he batted well.
In came a bloke averaging 5 this season. Fin, continuing to hold down an end, was full of wisdom and told the bloke to watch the ball. Seemed reasonable.
Fin finally lost his cool and went to hit out but was taken by a great ball under the bat.
Bob was up. Bob's always up. His quick singles are the bain of opposition bowlers. Unfortunately Bob was batting with a bloke who hits a sitter to point (young fella wearing different uniform. Just saying). Bob wants a single, the bloke is ball watching. Bob is run out by that 1sts tight fielding , mentioned above.
Liam S. strolls on and dabbles around a bit. Until he gets a free hit and absolutely dispatches it straight down the ground.
The bloke at the other end goes on to not watch the ball, get a knick through to the keeper and end the innings.
Luckily he scored more than 5.
Total 68
The Buzzards innings was mostly uneventful but enough.
Exceptions were, an absolute cracker of a ball from Liam S to demolish the stumps of an opener and a 14 year old kid bashing us around until one of the borrowed fielders took a spectacular one hander to dismiss said kid in sight of a 50.

2nd Grade

Good game on the weekend lads. Didn't get the win however we fought hard. I hope everyone playing that game felt and understood how quickly a game can change. Denzel and Josh got us off to an ok start with the bat. They proved to us that if you played the correct shots there's run in the wicket. We had a big collapse. Let's learn individually what we could've done better…… not panicking, changed mindset with the bat, not taking as big of risks.

To come fighting back with that total we put was a good effort. If things went our way in the field, it could've been a different result.

Very good to see a few new boys in the team really pushing for wickets in the end and chasing down the ball in the field like your life depended on it. Love it. That attitude and fight is how we win games.

Training on Tuesday see all of you then.

We do have the bye this weekend however I'm sure other grades will need blokes to fill in

1st Grade

First game back on Richo 1 after the renovation to the wickets to remove a few strips and able to cover the whole square finally.

Awesome to have a round with 2nd grade on Richo 2 concurrently.

Overcast day against diggers. Good early match day prep with tedball etc.

Another toss won, flipped well. 9/9 tosses won, hard part over. There should be an overs/unders for first toss lost. I’m sure the young blokes will create some odds on that soon.

Anyways, always bat first on Richo, even with as much grass as there was.

Pre-batting chat was similar with no more than 2wickets down at the 20over mark and happy with 80-100runs. But the wickets moreimportant.

2/89 at drinks, on the mark. Losing the skipper andJames Arnold on the late 20s.

Was a tough slow and bouncy deck to start on, anddiggers bowled well from the start.

2nd session chat, 200 should be a good score. The boysdelivered to get us there with the middle order doing most of the work throughRichie 36 and Tom 33. A few late ones see us 9/200 at the break.

Prebowling- hitting top of off with the new ball, and let the pitch do the work with the slowness and bounce for the first session. Targeting the pegs was plan B as the pitch deteriorated.

Didn’t need to as Will and Flynn hitting their marks,4/59 at drinks.

After drinks more of the same, 7/62 after not longthen a large spell of bowling maidens saw them bat late into the innings. WithRichie 3/10 off his 8. A late few wickets saw them all out for 104.

Fielding was good pressure through the innings, however a few chances dropped and one headbutted for four from Adam allowed them to get a few more than we would have liked.

A solid rounded performance from the boys, and we move onto next week against Nana Glen without the skipper. Let’s hope the VC in Will Bailey can keep up the tossing form.

Good luck and see you in a week.

T20

Sawtell Blue vs Sawtell Gold – T20 Thursday Night

Sawty v Sawty is always a fun one. Sawtell Gold won the toss and elected to bat. It was a strong contest with good bowling and solid hitting from both sides. Elijah Carle was the leading wicket taker of the night with a classy 3-fa, including the key wicket of Tom Rawdling, who made48, just shy of his fifty. With the help of Tom’s efforts, Sawtell Gold finished their 20 overs with a total of 157.

Sawtell Blue came out to bat and put up a good fight ,but Sawtell Gold bowled well as a unit and were able to finish the game with a win.

Great to see both teams scoring over a run a ball final result 8-157 8-123.

With both teams playing hard the experienced blokes passing on tips and game knowledge to the younger fellas. A really positive night of cricket all round.
