2026-27 Sawtell Cricket Club Newsletter- Preseason

2026/27 SAWTY CRICKET CLUB

‘ROUND UP’- PRESEASON

Welcome to the 2026/7 season of cricket. Special greetings to new folk joining the Sawtell Cricket Club. We had an incredible season last year with CHDCA Club of the Year Trophy, equal 3rd in NSW Community Cup, CHDCA T20 Champions, teams in grand finals everywhere and so many of us just enjoying the game with team mates. Sure the trophy cabinet had a few spaces but that’s what this year is for.

Time to check your kits. Get the cockroaches and mould out , (last season a Nana Glen bloke opened his kit for the first time and a Bandy-Bandy snake crawled out.)

I can’t thank enough those people in our community who have taken on roles as committee, coaches and captains. You are the drivers behind our club and very much appreciated. Captains and coaches volunteer ‘about’ 10 hours per week for their teams.

COMMITTEE

Your Committee has been meeting and organising the year ahead. We meet second Monday of the month for an hour and a half. Captains have also attended district meetings to get season run down. Please consider coming along to committee meetings to see where you can do a bit, every little bit helps. This Years executive committee is:

President- Michael Cheers (MB: 0419161903)

Secretary/Treasurer- Barrie Roche

Vice President (seniors)- Rod Sawaya

Vice President (juniors)- Paul McPherson

SPONSORS

Every team we enter in a competitions costs money for registration, insurance, ground fees and umpire fees. We try to keep costs as low as we can for players and this is only possible with the support of our generous sponsors. Links to our sponsors are on the club website. If you need the goods or services provided by our sponsors please consider them first. We have had a few new sponsors come onboard this year. Toormina Physiotherapy, Greg’s Trophies, Hilltop Café and Bellingen Tiling.  Toormina Physio is offering a discount to club members using their service. Please mention Sawtell Cricket Club if you use the services of our sponsors. Sawtell RSL offers us a venue each month for our meetings.

COMMUNICATION

Each team has a Whatsapp chat for the season. This is your main source of communication/information for the season. Really important for last minute changes for games or training, which can happen during the season. Contact your captains/coaches or myself and we’ll get you connected.

Weekly Round Up. Weekly newsletter posted on our club website. Match reports, photos and what’s on. I’m  asking captains and coaches to do a ‘brief’ match report. This can be done by anyone on the team or a parent and will relieve the workload on our captains and coaches. I’ll put a link on Whatsapp chats. Post photos on your team chats and I’ll grab them off for the newsletter.

Game dates and venues will be posted by Cricket NSW on the PLAYCRICKET app.  Suggest you get the app sorted on your phones ready for the season. Coaches will have more information for you.

GOOD SPORTS AFFLIATION

We are officially recognized as a Good Sports Club and this has been welcomed by the committee. This provides us with lots of resources around mental and physical health and helps with our profile for grant applications. As a member of our club this means being aware and responsible and not smoking/vaping in changerooms or where smoking/vaping is not permitted. Many venues are now smoke/vape free. Also not having alcohol in changerooms if juniors (U18s) are in your team. Celebrate but just be mindful and aware. The link below is to the Goods Sports website.

CODE OF CONDUCT

There has been some minor changes to the code of conduct  for Cricket NSW. The Code of Conduct Fact Sheet can be found on the following link.

RICHO NETS REJIG

Coffs Harbour City Council (CHCC) has purchased new weight bags to hold down our nets between lanes, much appreciated.

CHCC is also transforming the current western net into a public access net. There isn’t a public cricket net in Sawtell//Toormina area at present. No cost to our club.

TRAINING

There has been some preseason training and captains/coaches are locking in training. Seniors look like training Tuesday and Thursday arvos from 5.30. Junior coaches are finalising training organization and will lock it in when the school term starts. Keep a check on your Whatsapp chats.

PITCH WORKING BEE

An agile team of Sawtell Cricket Club members turned up to top dress the Richo 1 pitch. It was all done in 2 hours with Chris and Kelvin leading the way. One of our sponsors, Shoreline Freighters have been storing the ‘special soil’ for us for quite a while and transported and delivered it for free. This is very much appreciated by the club. Sawty runs should flow fluently on the new pitch.

RAFFLES

Raffles at the Sawtell Hotel from 5.30 ‘til 7.30pm every Friday night are a major fund raiser for the club. This is an opportunity for all club members to help out and have fun at the same time. There is a team raffles roster below. Each team needs 4 people including the coordinator. A team raffles coordinator will each week  organise things. Helpers just need to grab a beverage and sell tickets. A roster has been posted on team Whatsapp chats.
